Conditional Love…

He strives to give her, his beloved child a life a life better

better

then he lived.

He wants, almost needs to protect her.

Protect her from what? Harm?

Unable to learn, for he can’t allow her to feel what he felt,

to hurt where he hurt,

to lose what he lost.

“Don’t cry my child, I’ll dry your tears.”

“I’m not only your father, I’m your daddy.”

“You are mine.”

Her independence grows stronger, in body she has reached adulthood.

His mind’s eye deceives him, he still sees her,

sees her as his little girl,

A little girl he can control.

She struggles to break free from his grip.

A grip tightened and rusted over time,

time that has since crippled her with guilt.

She inside is frozen in time, a little girl unable to excel in a grown up world,

that surrounds her inner child.

Longing to love, longing to be loved, she reaches out,

“Hold me Daddy, for the person I am.”

He takes her in his arms, arms bound with expectations of her, she will never meet.

Exhausted,

She breaks free from his conditional embrace.

Both parting saddened with a tear-stained face…

This is a poem I wrote as a teenager. It is one of the poems in my book  “If I Could Write My Heart.”  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009XIWWPG

There is hope.
